Traditionally played with on New Year’s Day, koma are more than just toys—they’re a cherished folk craft and a refined art form in Japan. The elegant spin of the top is said to symbolize smooth work, quick wit, and the healthy circulation of money.
Although it no longer spins well, the koma still makes a charming decorative object.
It is likely to have been made around 1970.
