A beautifully woven vintage okeba—a traditional Japanese bamboo creel once used for fishing, foraging, and mountain work. The rounded, melon-shaped body is reinforced with vertical bamboo ribs, while the tight diagonal plaiting gives the basket strength and flexibility. A woven bamboo strap allows it to be worn over the shoulder during use.
Richly patinated from age and fieldwork, this piece carries the quiet character of Japanese rural craft. Its sculptural form and finely detailed weaving make it a striking decorative object as well as a collectible example of mingei basketry.
Most likely dating from the 1930s-1950s. In excellent condition.
