Shima Hotta is a Japanese jewelry designer based in Nagano, Japan. Hotta began her artistic career in the late 80s when she studied pottery in Seattle and California, during which time she developed a deep appreciation for handcrafted quality. She later began exploring new materials and techniques to explore the connection between fire and metal.
Under the Shima label, she creates beautiful contemporary jewelry including earrings, necklaces, and pins. Each piece celebrates clean lines, attention to detail, and an organic sensibility. To make the silver burned on brass works, she coats silver liquid on unprocessed brass up to four or five times. The silver layer is thicker than the plating. Over time, the silver will tarnish gently for a more antique look; simply polish with a silver cleaning cloth to refresh.
