Founded in the city of Nanao in 1892, Takazawa Candle Co. has been creating plant-based wax candles or "wa-rousoku" for over a century using traditional techniques. The candles are unique for their hollow washi paper wicks, made by wrapping dried material from a plant around washi shaped into a cylinder. This particular method allows air to pass up through the lower part of the candle through the wick's hollow center, giving the candle a large flame with a bright quality. Takazawa Candle Co. also uses a wax derived from plant-based raw materials, such as haze seeds, canola flower, and coconut oil.
