Kobayashi Setsumasa founded his first label General Research in 1993. In 2006 Satsumasa changed the name to Mountain Research which reflects his love of the outdoors and creative research method and philosophy. Each season, he heads to the mountains to clear his head and draw inspiration and direction for the new season ahead. Consistently utilitarian, Mountain Research is inspired by military, naval, mountaineering wear and workwear.
Mountain Research started its history in 2006. The founder and main designer of the brand, Kobayashi Setsumasa, had an idea to focus on a specific subject like a mountain. Mountain Research goes beyond stereotypical outdoor activities and is about life in the mountains with an anarchist minded spirit.
Nowadays, on top of belonging to some of the most talented designers in the world, Kobayashi is also one of the most important influencers and pioneers within the whole Japanese outdoor scene. Mountain Research clothing is gaining popularity thanks to his unique vision of clothing.
As Kobayashi Setsumasa says, despite their huge influence on contemporary fashion with each new collection, he has never focused on trends.
His inspiration comes from a wide range of features and environments, from nature to mountain biking gear and military clothing. And of course, from different eras in the past, especially the freedom represented in the 60s and 70s clothing and style.
