Sori Yanagi (1915 - 2011) was an iconic Japanese product designer known for his ability to fuse modern materials and forms with a Japanese folk craft sensibility. Yanagi was born the son of the Japanese Folk Crafts Museum founder, Soetsu Yanagi. He studied both art and architecture in school, and went on to play a key role in Japanese modern industrial design in the postwar period.
Yanagi is also known for having designed the torch holder and the seats in the stadium for the Tokyo Olympic Games in 1964, as well as for his iconic Butterfly Stool. His focus was always to create long-lasting products that people finds timelessly useful in everyday life. His philosophy and passion towards the organic beauty in his line of work have been appreciated around the world.
