Vintage Japanese Sakabukuro Bags
Details
Sakabukuro were once used in the purification process of sake making. They are made of cotton, which is then treated with persimoon tannin, kakibushi, to make them waterproof. The dense stitching of the cotton, coupled with the persimmon tannin treatment, allowed for the crude sake pressed through these bags to be separated from the rice particles.
Date unknown, most likely late 19th or early 20th century.
You can make bags, purses, or stuff them to make lumbar pillows.
