Sakiko Sugimura, a Japanese metal artist known for her intricate small-scale works, employs a suction-casting process in which molten metal is poured into a prepared mold and pulled into fine detail under vacuum. This bronze and aluminum vase is created using that technique.
To form the surface patterns, embroidery is stitched directly onto the wax mold, and the wax is lightly pierced with a needle so that it remains stable during casting.
The finished vase is composed of two sections—the domed top lifts off, making it easy to add water to the interior chamber.
