These vintage wooden boards once belonged to a Japanese lacquer (urushi) craftsman and carry the beautifully layered marks of their past life—drips, scratches, pigment streaks, and burnished areas formed through years of use. Artisans used boards like this to mix colors, test viscosity, and rest tools while building lacquerware coat by coat. Today, it reads like an abstract painting, full of depth and history. It is a sculptural and authentic artifact of Japanese craft tradition.
Dating from the early to mid-20th century, these boards show a beautiful mix of wear, oxidation, and pigment, each mark reflecting the hand of the artisan who worked over it. These boards are now collected as sculptural objects for their raw, painterly appeal and their intimate connection to traditional craft.
