Vintage Japanese Merchant Cloth with Kamon
Details
An authentic vintage Japanese merchant textile woven from handwoven hemp (asa) in a soft gray-brown tone. The cloth features a striking oversized kamon (family crest) hand-applied in white resist, accompanied by bold brush-painted calligraphy in one corner.
Originally used in a commercial or household setting—possibly as a shop curtain, wrapping cloth, or ceremonial textile—it bears the marks of a long working life. Several small handwoven reinforcement patches and visible stitched seams reflect the traditional Japanese practice of repairing and preserving textiles rather than replacing them.
The open weave, softened hand, subtle patina, and scattered signs of age give the cloth exceptional character, while the bold crest creates a dramatic graphic presence. Today it makes a striking wall hanging and is equally appealing to collectors of Japanese folk textiles and Wabi-sabi interiors.
