This handcrafted statement necklace by Hideko Fukushima features individually formed beads made from Japanese washi paper, each with an organic shape and a striking black-and-ivory marbled finish. The beads are strung on a twisted washi paper cord with a simple loop closure, keeping the piece exceptionally lightweight while showcasing the beauty and versatility of traditional Japanese paper. Each necklace is one of a kind, with subtle variations in shape and pattern.
Hideko Fukushima works with traditional Washi paper from Ayabe City, Kyoto Prefecture, hand-pulled and dyed with vibrant colors drawn from nature. To each piece she adds lacquer, persimmon tannin, and foil—materials that deepen the color and strengthen the surface.
Treated with a water repellent Pearltone finish. If soiled, wipe gently with a lightly dampened cloth. Store away from direct sunlight.
