Details

Made from old, ragged clothing and bedding fabrics, ropes like this were everyday artifacts of resourcefulness in old Japan. If you didn’t have enough scraps on hand, you could even buy remnants from a rag merchant. These ropes were used for countless daily tasks—tying, hauling, securing bundles—and perhaps even as makeshift bridles for horses or oxen. Each twist and knot speaks to a time when nothing was wasted and everything had a purpose.
